Universe of Imagination 40 Piece Road and Rail Train Set Review

Universe of Imagination 40 Piece Road and Rail Train Set
What do you call a train that eats toffee? A chew chew train.

The Universe of Imagination 40 Piece Road and Rail Train Set looks to be the perfect buy for a train and car-mad toddler.

But was it a good buy? Let's find out! Read on to find out if it's worth the money, and how to get it for less.

1. What do you get:

A 3-piece monorail type train that joins together by magnets, 2 wooden cars, a few pieces of plastic road including a level crossing and enough wooden track to make a loop. A bridge and a raised platform to represent a station, plastic road signs and wooden trees and figures make up the rest of the set.
Score: 8/10

Not every piece, only those that stayed upright

Fun Factor:

The play mat the track is supposed to sit on is next to useless. The illustration may look good, but it's no good if the signposts and trees keep falling over. Especially when little boys kneel on the edge. a rigid wooden board would work so much better. Without being able to use the playmat, it's just not as fun. And with only enough track and road pieces to put it together one way, it is limited playability.
Score: 8/10

The mean streets of Dining Table

Value For Money:

40 pieces sounds impressive, but when you factor in the unusable playmat, and over half the pieces are the smaller items consisting of plastic roadsigns and wooden trees, and at £32.99, it's VFM score is held back. Had I bought it on offer, my score would have been higher.
Score: 8/10

Here's how to get it for less:

The Universe of Imagination range are exclusive to Toys R Us but there's a couple of ways to get it cheaper, even if it's reduced any way.
